Despite Marcus Stoinis’ stunning knock of 149 runs, the Kiwi bowling attack plundered win from Australia and in a nail-biting finish, New Zealand won by six runs in the first match of the three-match Chappell-Haddle Trophy at the Eden Park on January 30.
After winning the toss, the Aussies asked the Kiwis to bat first. for Australia, Mathew Wade who was handed the responsibility of leading Australia in the absence of Steve Smith and David Warner, was ruled out of the contest with a back injury he picked up on the eve of the match. That meant Aron Finch, who was dropped from the squad for the previous series, became Australia’s 24th One-Day International captain.

The Kiwis had an early shock as opener Tom Latham was dismissed by Mitchell Starc in the third over but Martin Guptil kept on the show going and scored a massive 61 runs before he was bowled by Marcus Stoinis.

The middle order did the rest of the job as Neil Broom and James Neesham scored 73 and 43 respectively and helped the team to move ahead of the score of 250 runs. New Zealand, by the end of the innings, managed to put a massive total of 286 runs and set a target of 287 for the Australians to chase.

Like the Kiwis, the Aussies also had a poor start as the team lost their captain in the 4th over and the team got the first shock at a total of 9 runs. And after that, it seemed like a destructive curse has hit the Kangaroos and the match started getting diverted towards the Kiwis. By the end of 13th over, the Australian side was reduced to 54 for 5 and half the top order was back to the pavilion.

Then came the giant of the game, Marcus Stoinins. After returning a three-wicket haul to restrict New Zealand in the middle overs, he batted with extreme poise under tremendous pressure in his 117-ball knock. The slide started in the fourth over when Trent Boult dismissed Aaron Finch (4) and Travis Head (5) in space of four balls. Tim Southee, Boult’s new ball partner, then joined to rock the visitors by picking up Peter Handscomb for 7.

Marcus Stoinins then scored an unbeaten 146, his maiden One-Day International ton only in his second game, to keep Australia afloat for most parts of the innings but with next to nothing coming from the top order, he was left with a little too much to do.

The duo of Stoinis and Faulkner scored a total of 81 for the seventh-wicket in 16.1 overs. Their strategy was pretty simple – keep chipping away at the target and get as close as possible before a late onslaught. However, just when the stand was turning into a threatening one, it was nipped out by Colin Munro bowled Faulkner for 25 in the 25th over.

Australia kept their spirits up as Stoinis had already moved his wand to do the magic but in the 49th over Trent Boult made a quick-fire seven-ball 16 to give the team much-needed thrust in the end and a challenging total.

Brief scores: New Zealand 286/9 in 50 overs (Neil Broom 73, Martin Guptill 61; Marcus Stoinis 3-49) beat Australia 280 all out in 47 overs (Stoinis 146*; Mitchell Santner 3-44) by six runs.
