What Northeasterners Face In Delhi

Northeasterners in Delhi have been murdered, assaulted, robbed, raped, tortured and abused. Being called names is probably the least of their worries in a city where they are treated like outsiders, where more often than not people do not  even recognise the northeastern state they are from.

Between 2011 and 2014, the crimes in which people from the northeastern states were victims went up by 270%.

While the discrimination cuts across genders, it’s worse for a woman from the Northeast in a city like Delhi that has earned itself the tag of being one of the most unsafe cities.

In 2014, a survey conducted by the Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research, Jamia Millia Islamia and National Commission for Women revealed that 81 per cent of women from Northeastern states of India had faced harassment in the capital on a daily basis.
