#LabourDay: The Man Who’s Fighting A War Against Slavery In India

For the past 12 years of his life, Gorana has been on a crusade to crack down on modern slavery in India

In 2016, the Global Slavery Index revealed that 18 million people or 1.4 percent of the total population in India live in conditions akin to modern slavery.

For 34-year-old Nirmal Gorana, the figures are laughable. For the past 12 years of his life, Gorana has been on a crusade to crack down on modern slavery in India. According to him, 500 million people in India live under various forms of modern slavery.

In the last decade or so, Gorana has rescued thousands of bonded labourers from various states of India. While his work entails a lot of risk from labour mafias and other contractors, he claims there’s no stopping now.
