This Father-Daughter Duo From Tripura Saved 2000 Lives

They averted a major rail accident last month.

Swapan Debbarma from Dhancherra village in Dhalai district is Tripura’s newest hero. The 45-year-old tribal averted a major train accident last month and saved the lives of 2000 railway passengers recently.  On June 15, Swapan and his 11-year-old daughter Sumati had gone to fetch for bamboo shoots in his village. At Ambassa, he saw that a rail track that had got damaged in the heavy rains. At that moment, he heard Dharmanagar – Agartala passenger train approaching towards them. Sensing danger, Swapan, along with his daughter jumped into action to stop the train. He took off his clothes and the father-daughter duo together waved it at the train which was coming towards them. Thankfully, the loco-driver sensed the danger and the train was stopped.

 

For their praiseworthy act of bravery and presence of mind, the two got appreciation and awards from all quarters. They have received many cash prizes from many leaders, including ministers. They were even invited and felicitated in the Tripura Assembly. Chief Minister Biplab Deb has also recommended Sumati’s name for President’s gallantry award.
