On Oxygen Support, Jharkhand Woman Travels 330 km To Cast Her Vote

Jharkhand's Renu Mishra, who was undergoing treatment for acute bronchitits in Kolkata, travelled nearly 330 kms to her home in Dumka to cast her vote

As polling for the last phase of 2019 general elections came to an end, a 59-year-old woman defied all odds to exercise her democratic right. Jharkhand’s Renu Mishra, who was undergoing treatment for acute bronchitits in Kolkata, travelled nearly 330 kms to her home in Dumka to cast her vote.

“As long as I am alive, I will be using my democratic right to contribute towards nation building,” Mishra told Hindustan Times.

Mishra served at upgraded Khajuria middle school in Dumka as a headmistress, she was admitted to the World Health hospital in Dumka on January 23 after she complained to having breathing problem.

When she came to know that Dumka would go to polls on May 19, she was determined to go to cast her vote, the HT report says.

A request was made to the Dumka administration on her behalf to arrange for an ambulance and other medical facilities for her. The administration arranged all the facilities.

Mukesh Kumar, Dumka, deputy commissioner, said that they received Mishra’s application around May 12 and were influenced by the woman’s determination and commitment. They arranged for all the medical facilities that Mishra required.

In the second phase of polling, a 30-year-old voter came on a stretcher in an ambulance to caste his vote at Ulthoor in Karnataka’s Udupi district. Even when the 30-year-old could not walk, Jayasheela Poojary insisted on exercising his right to vote. He was carried from the ambulance to the polling booth on a stretcher.
