‘My stepping down is my statement’: Sujoy Ghosh resigns as IFFI jury head after Nude, Sexy Durga dropped

The decision comes days after the Information and Broadcasting Ministry dropped two films - Ravi Jadhav's Nude and Sanal Kumar Sasidharan’s Sexy Durga from the IFFI line up

Kahani director Sujoy Ghosh has resigned as the head of the jury of the International Film Festival of India. The decision comes days after the Information and Broadcasting Ministry dropped two films – Ravi Jadhav’s Nude and Sanal Kumar Sasidharan’s Sexy Durga from the list of films that were shortlisted by a 13-member jury to be screened at IFFI. While both the films were popular choices among the jury members, the Ministry reportedly felt that the tittles of the film were too provocative.

When InUth reached out to Ghosh, he said “My stepping down is my statement,” while refusing to divulge any other detail.

Sexy Durga and nude dropped from IFFI film list

As per several media reports, all the jury members were left disappointed when the final list of the feature film section didn’t have these two films. In fact, the jury liked Nude so much that they reportedly wanted it to be the opening film of the festival. Some members had even written to the Ministry in their personal capacity to rethink the film line up and respect the jury’s decision.

In an earlier interview with InUth, writer Apurva Asrani said:

I had no idea these films had been dropped till yesterday. Also, I learned from the new opening film from the press. I have written to the federation expressing my disappointment.

Asrani also insisted that there was nothing controversial about the content of the films. “Nude & Sexy Durga are important films for our society and present women with utmost dignity and respect. I sincerely hope the ministry would reconsider this move and uphold the decision of the jury,” he added.
