#MeTooRising: India Shines Bright On World Map But Nobody Should Be Proud Of It

Google's #MeTooRising map shows that stories of sexual harassment are not just coming from urban metropolises, but also from smaller cities

Google Trends’ interactive #MeTooRising map uses the trends data and charts where all the stories of sexual harassment are being reported and talked about since October 2017. If you browse through it, you’ll see several cities all over the world light up with #MeToo conversations. From sports journalists in Rio De Janerio talking about their harrowing experiences while covering football matches to celebrities in Karachi finding strength in each other’s voices, Google Trends shows where all the #MeToo movement has sparked debates. But one country stands out among the rest — India.

The entire map of India is alive with people sharing their stories of sexual harassment. For the last three weeks, India has been enveloped by the #MeToo movement with women and men sharing how they faced sexual harassment in the film industry, newsrooms, education institutions, stand-up comedy, Catholic church etc. This has led to the dissolution of a production house, resignations of editors of prominent media houses and has pressured the central government to act on a minister accused of sexual harassment by multiple women.

Importantly, the #MeTooRising map shows that the movement is not just limited to metropolises. People in Tier-II and Tier-III cities like Udupi, Siliguri, Bikaner, Vasco da Gama, Ratlam and Hisar are also sharing their stories and that too, in growing numbers. The map also provides resources for sexual assault survivors with discussion forums, articles and helpline numbers to report sexual harassment.

Here’s how people are reacting on Twitter to the Google Trends map:
