Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi is often the butt of jokes and political memes, that usually go viral on social media. Gandhi has hardly ever been taken seriously by people. But, he has been a changed man of late, almost as if he has worked up a new strategy to re-upholster his public image. Now, more aggressive than ever, Gandhi has landed some pretty cutting remarks about the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
However, a recent meme on the Congress VP was enough to remind us of the public’s old perception of him. A 20-second clip of Gandhi’s speech from Patan, Gujarat, has been doing the rounds on the internet lately, where the 47-year-old politician can be heard saying, “I will install such a machine that if you feed in potatoes from one side, you’ll get gold from the other side.”
Of course, people did not miss a heartbeat to jump on the opportunity to create ‘potato to gold’ memes, questioning Gandhi’s intelligence. Adding masala to political stories now seems to be a shared hobby amongst the masses.

However, Rahul Gandhi’s words have been taken wildly out of context. In his full 26-minute long speech, Gandhi speaks about the false promises made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the state of Gujarat. While talking about the promises Modi had made to potato farmers, Gandhi, quoting the Prime Minister, had made the potato-to-gold turning machine statement.
Around the 17-minute mark, Gandhi says,
He promised the Adivasi community Rs 40,000 crores, but he didn’t give them a single rupee. A few months ago when the floods came, he promised to give Rs 500 crores, but he didn’t give them a single rupee. He told potato farmers that he will install such a machine, that if you feed in potatoes from one side, you’ll get gold from the other side. These are not my words, these are the words of Narendra Modi.
It seems people started sharing the shortened clip to malign the Congress VP’s image ahead of Gujarat Assembly elections, set to be held next month. People are now sharing the full video to tackle the escalation of fake news.
