Cost Of Building Toilet Too High? West Bengal’s Akash Bhoumick Has An Ingenious Solution

The method not only recycles discarded plastic bottles but also provides a cost-effective means for constructing a toilet

Over 15,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated in India every day. Of this, over 6,100 tonnes of plastic ends up in landfills and streams which, in turn, pollutes the environment. But West Bengal’s Akash Bhoumick has come up with an ingenious solution to this problem.

He has built a toilet made of plastic waste in Purbasthali village in Bardhaman region. Each bottle used in this toilet is filled with sand and the structure is held together with cement. Unlike bricks, which cost around Rs 5 per unit, these bottles cost just Rs 2 per unit.

However, this is not the first such initiative in India. Eco-friendly toilets made of discarded plastic bottles have been constructed in Jamshedpur and Mumbai as well.
