Kolkata is a land of rich culture and heritage. Known as the city of joy, Kolkata is so much more than the centuries old colonial building and Puchkas. It’s a music-loving, literature-obsessed, food-devoted city, everyone is bound to fall in love with. The massive and age-old buildings of the British era with the lush green gardens do not fail to mesmerise the tourists.

However, behind the fascinating and charming appeal of some of these old buildings are many spooky tales that are sure to send chills down your spine. There are some places in Kolkata which are believed to be haunted. You may or may not believe in ghosts, but these places in Kolkata will give you a weird and an eerie feeling that will not leave you for a long time.

National Library

One of the biggest libraries in the country, the Indian National Library in Kolkata is believed to be one of the most haunted places in the city. People have claimed to have heard footsteps in an empty library. Some have also claimed that they have felt a presence of someone breathing down their neck while they are in the library reading alone. Spooky much!

Guards often refuse to take night shifts here because some eye witnesses have allegedly seen shadows fading in front of them. People have also found an existence of a secret library within the national library.

Putul Bari

If you are someone who got scared of “Annabelle,” the movie and are super scared of creepy looking dolls, you would definitely want to stay away from the Dollhouse of Kolkata, Putu Bari. Legend has it, that rich babus from the ancient era brought young babies to sexually exploit them in this house.

People believe that it is the spirits of those young girls that still haunt this place. A number of paranormal activities have also been recorded here.

South Park Street Cemetery

People visiting this place have experienced a strange eerie feeling enough to spook them out. People believe they have suddenly started feeling really cold once they are in the cemetery. Some have also complained of breathlessness, many of which have fallen sick after coming back from the cemetery.

Rabindra Sarobar Metro Station

A number of suicides have reportedly taken place at this metro station in Kolkata. Many of them have claimed to see people disappearing right in front of their eyes. A train driver had once claimed that he had seen someone running on the railway track who disappeared suddenly.

Hastings House

Hastings house was built by the first Governor-General of British India, Warren Hastings. Not one, not two, people believe that three ghosts haunt this house. Locals believe that Warren Hastings visits this house every new year’s eve to collect some of his belongings. Some people have also apparently seen a spirit of a young boy who had died while playing football with his friends on that ground. Some say that you can also witness a glimpse of a carriage pulled by four horses near the Hastings house.

Writers building is believed to be one of the most haunted places in Kolkata. Not many people dare to visit this place after sunset. Not even officials. People who have visited this place after dark have heard footsteps and heard someone crying in the spooky building.

The spirit of the then general inspector Colonel Simpson apparently haunts this place.

Tagore House

Several spooky tales have been recorded in this huge palace which was once home to Rabindranath Tagore’s family. People have happened to hear the sound of anklets from an empty room. Some have also claimed that the lights would suddenly turn on in the middle of the night. The scary tales of this house was also recorded and published in ‘Thakurbarir Bhooter Golpo’ (Ghost Stories from Thakurbari).

New Market

Legend has it that three Anglo-Indian ladies were murdered in this market which is one of the busiest markets in Kolkata. People have apparently heard the voices of women asking for help. But when they went to look for them, none could be seen.

The Royal Calcutta Turf Club

“William Saheb er Sada Ghora” or “Sir Williams’s white horse” is supposed to be the ghost that haunts this place. The story goes like this: George Williams was believed to be a racing maniac and owned a gorgeous white horse named Pride. Pride won him a number of races but went on to grow weak old, eventually losing the races. One day, Pride was found dead on the race tracks. Locals claim to have seen a glowing white horse galloping on the race tracks on a moonlit Saturday night. Not an ideal Saturday night outing, eh?

Under Howrah Bridge

Howrah Bridge is one of the iconic landmarks of the city of joy. People often go and sit under the Howrah Bridge to relax after a tiring day work. But, apparently, the place is haunted. Some people believe spirits of people who have lost their lives in the Ganges haunt this area. Some have claimed that they have heard women crying and calling out their name in a spooky hushed tone.

Forget Victoria Memorial and Park Street, we dare you to visit these haunted places after sunset if you are the adventure junkie.
