A National Award winning filmmaker just slammed Baahubali 2 for ‘not contributing to Indian cinema’

This acclaimed filmmaker says that SS Rajamouli's Baahubali 2 did not serve any purpose and should not have been praised this much

Baahubali 2 may be on a record-breaking spree at the Box Office everywhere it has released, but the film’s content has not gone down well with somebody. While most of the celebrities and filmmakers are busy heaping praises on the SS Rajamouli blockbuster, legendary Malayalam filmmaker, Adoor Gopalakrishnan has a different opinion. The 17-time-National-award winner has expressed his disappointment with the film and by stating that Baahubali 2 has not contributed anything to Indian cinema. He has also added that he would not even spend Rs 10 for watching Baahubali 2.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan was giving a group interview to a popular Malayalam television on Sunday, 4 June, along with Baahubali’s art director Santhosh Cyril, actress Geethu Mohandas and Malayalam actor Kunchacko Boban. In the interview, Gopalakrishnan was quoted as saying;

Baahubali has not contributed anything to Indian cinema. Baahubali is just another Patala Bhairavi, a Telugu fantasy film released back in 1951. I would not even spend Rs 10 for watching this movie. I’m sorry to ask this but isn’t a crime to spend that kind of money on a film which is some kind of perversion. Films like Baahubali are giving wrong influence to the audience. It will ruin the culture of healthy cinema. If you have Rs 10 crore, you can make good Rs 10 films. If you have Rs 100 crore, you can make 100 good films.”

Interestingly, this is not the first time the legendary director is making such statements against the SS Rajamouli film. Earlier, when Baahubali: The Beginning won the national award, Adoor Gopalakrishnan stated that “When Bahubali gets a National Award, it’s devastating and sends a bad message to influencers.”

Meanwhile, Baahubali 2 has successfully completed its one-month theatrical run at the Box Office worldwide. The war-drama, which had released on April 28 has so far minted Rs 1700 crore worldwide to become the second all-time grosser after Aamir Khan’s Dangal.
