Mohanlal emerges India’s first superstar to deliver 5 straight blockbusters in 5 months including 2 Rs.100 crore grossers

This has never happened before. Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has created history by delivering five straight blockbuster films in five months. Yes, you heard it right! Five blockbuster films in five months. The four-time National-award winner’s previous five releases – Janatha Garage, Oppam, Pulimurugan, Manyam Puli and his first release of 2017, Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol turned out to be clean blockbusters at the Box Office. Interestingly, Janatha Garage and Pulimurugan also crossed the coveted Rs. 100 crore mark internationally.

1) Janatha Garage

Mohanlal’s Telugu film, Janatha Garage was the actor’s first release in 2016. The film, which had released on 1 September also starred Jr. NTR and Unni Mukundan. The Koratala Siva-directorial went on to collect Rs 135 crore worldwide become the highest Telugu grosser of 2016. The film also marked the first Rs. 100 crore hit for Lalettan.

2) Oppam

Mohanlal’s first Malayalam release of 2016, Oppam was released on 8 September, a week after Janatha Garage release. The film, which also marked the 22nd collaboration of the actor with his friend and director Priyadarshan went on to become all-time third highest grosser in the history of Malayalam cinema. At the end of its 125-days theatrical release, the Antony Perumbavoor production venture has grossed Rs.68 crore worldwide to become Mohanlal’s second blockbuster in a row.

3) Pulimurugan

Mohanlal scored hat-trick of blockbusters with his 2016 Dusshera release, Pulimurugan. The action-entertainer, which had released on 7 Octoberstarred the actor in the titular role of hunter, Murugan was directed by Vysakh and produced by Tomichan Mulakupadam. Pulimurugan made history by becoming the first Rs. 100 crore grosser of Malayalam cinema and the second century hit for the actor. The film also emerged as the all-time Malayalam grosser in India, UAE, New Zealand, UK and US Box Office as well. Interestingly, Pulimurugan is still running to packed houses in more than 20 centers in Kerala has so far collected Rs. 153 crore worldwide (including its Telugu version, Manyam Puli).

4) Manyam Puli

December 2 2016 saw the release of Manyam Puli, the Telugu dubbed version of Pulimurugan. The film was released in 500 screens across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and was the surprise Telugu blockbuster of last year. Upon its release, the film had stiff competition from the Ram Charan starrer Dhruva, which released one week after Manyam Puli. But The Complete Actor’s Telugu dubbed film went on to collect Rs. 11 at the Telugu Box Office to become Mohanlal’s fourth blockbuster in a row in 2016.

5) Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol

Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol was Mohanlal’s first release of 2017. Expectations were high from this film thanks to actor’s four back-to-back blockbusters of 2016. And as expected, the family entertainer directed by Jibu Jacob and produced by Sophia Paul opened to terrific response at the Kerala Box Office. Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, which had released on 20 January also emerged as the second fastest film to complete 10000 shows at the Kerala Box Office. The film, which also starred Meena and Kasaba fame Neha Saxena turned out to be the first Malayalam blockbuster of 2017. Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol has so far minted Rs. 30 crores at the Kerala Box Office to become Lalettan’s fifth blockbuster in five months.
