Malayalam actress Surabhi Lakshmi abused for hurting religious sentiments by eating beef on Onam

Surabhi Lakshmi was abused for eating beef on Onam. Trolls took to social media and said filthy things about the Malayalam actress

Actresses getting trolled and abused on social media has sadly become the new normal. From body shaming to being called names, actresses go through a lot these days. The latest actress to fall victim to this hatred is Surabhi Lakshmi. This National Film award winning actress’ social media profiles have been flooded with hate comments since Onam. The reason, you ask? It was Surabhi’s appearance on a  TV show in which she ate beef. The show aired on Onam and many took offence on it.

The ones who abused her on social media said on Onam only vegetarian dishes are served. They said she insulted the festival. However, it is a culture in North Kerala to eat non-vegetarian dishes on the festival. But this fact did not affect trolls and they carried on with their job. The programme was aired on Onam Day on Media One TV and it showed Surabhi visiting her favourite restaurant in Kozhikode. In the program she said, beef was the restaurant’s signature dish and she ate  Malabar Parotta with beef curry.

Surabhi’s day out with the channel did not go down well with many. It was soon given a communal colour, trolls suggested the channel aired the episode with the motive of hurting Hindu sentiments. They said since the channel has a Muslim management it was all pre-planned.

The comments she received ranged from ugly to venomous. Someone said her actions did not suit her name, one asked her to eat pork while another was the opinion that she did dirty things for money.

Talking about the entire issue, Surabhi said:

The channel has been asking for my interview for quite some time and that’s when I agreed to do that programme in a hotel which I usually visit. Hunger is a basic instinct of life and when I’m hungry I don’t usually care if it’s beef, chicken or pork. The issue is not that I ate beef, but that the programme was telecast during Onam.

The question which pops to mind is – will trolls ever learn?
