Kerala Box Office: Baahubali 2 emerges as 2nd film to have the highest screen count after Pulimurugan

Baahubali 2 has completed 50 days theatrical run at the Kerela Box Office and emerged 2nd film after Pulimurugan to have highest screen count

Similar to the Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Tamil versions of SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus Baahubali: The Conclusion, it’s Malayalam version too has successfully completed 50-days theatrical run at the Kerala Box Office. The film, a sequel to the 2015 blockbuster Baahubali: The Beginning was released simultaneously in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada languages on April 28.

Generally, non-Malayalam films or the Malayalam dubbed versions of non-Malayalam films struggle to get a good number of screens after the completion of one-month theatrical run at the Kerala. Even the 2016 non-Malayalam blockbusters, Hollywood fantasy adventure The Jungle Book, Tamil blockbusters Ilyathalapathy Vijay’s Theri and Rajinikanth starrer Kabali had lost a majority of screens after the completion of one-month theatrical run across the cinemas of God’s own country.

However, in the case of Baahubali 2, it has a different story to tell as the SS Rajamouli’s blockbuster is still running in 103 screens in Kerala, which is a phenomenal feat, considering that the average screen count of non-superstar Malayalam films’ used to release between 80 – 110 screens on its opening day of its theatrical release.

And with this feat, Baahubali 2 emerged as the second film to have 100 plus screen count post the 50-days theatrical run at the Kerala Box Office. Malayalam cinema’s first Rs. 100 crore grosser, the 2016 Mohanlal blockbuster Pulimurugan still holds the No. 1 spot with 125 screens at the Kerala Box Office.

Meanwhile, Baahubali 2 is challenging Pulimurugan‘s record at the Kerala Box Office. The film has so far crossed Rs. 70 crore to become the all-time second industry hit after Pulimurugan. Though Baahubali 2 turned out industry hits in Bollywood, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada industries, it is 17 crores away to become the all-time Malayalam blockbuster.
