Hannah Gadsby Won The 2018 Emmys And Don’t Let Anyone Else Tell You Different

Hannah Gadsby is the gift that just keeps on giving.

A short while after Nanette, Hannah Gadsby’s Netflix special dropped, Michael Che, one of the two hosts of the 70th Emmy Awards, took to his Instagram account to talk about how much he does not like standup acts that talk about ‘rape stories’. And by talk, we mean he took to Instagram’s story feature to repeatedly diss how such shows are not comedies, but rather an ‘anti-comedy comedy’ or a ‘stand-up tragedy’. Lawl.

Not that he’d seen Nanette, he repeatedly told those responding to his Instagram story. But when has that tiny little detail ever stopped a male of our species from mansplaining? In short, the dude you might not have heard of if you don’t regularly follow SNL (and let’s face it, how many of us really, truly do?), did not find Nanette ‘funny enough’ to be deemed as a stellar stand-up comedy special. Somehow, without even having seen it, the whole thing had him triggered to a point where he went on to define what comedy specials should be about. And in case you were waiting with bated breath, stand-ups should make ‘him wanna laugh’, okay? Do ‘not make this (Nanette) what it’s not’, declared Che.

So clearly it must have been fun for Hannah Gadsby as she took to the stage at the Emmys where one of her most vocal critics was hosting, and do a laugh-out-loud bit about how jokes tend to elude men. Well, ‘not all men, but a lot of them’, as Hannah says.

While on stage to present an award for Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series, Hannah might only have spoken for under a minute, but that was enough to eviscerate her critics. All of whom, needless to say, were male comedians hell-bent on declaring Nanette did not have ‘enough jokes’.

Here’s her speech:

This is _ not normal? The world’s gone a bit crazy. I mean, for somebody like me – a nobody, from nowhere – gets this sweet gig, free suit, new boots, just cause I don’t like men? That’s a joke, of course. Just jokes, fellas, calm down. #NotAllMen, but a lot of ’em. No, it is just jokes, but what are jokes these days? We don’t know. Nobody knows what jokes are. Especially not men! Am I right, fellas? That’s why I’m presenting alone.

BOOM. *looks up to enjoy the fireworks as Hannah’s critics spontaneously combust*

ICYMI: That’s Hannah Gadsby basically winning the 2018 Emmys. Twitter, of course, approves.

Imagine being a man who blames Hannah Gadsby for the “death of comedy” instead of all the shitty jokes that numerous men have been pumping out for the past few decades. #emmys

“Nobody knows what jokes are…especially not men. Am I right fellahs?” Hannah Gadsby, providing she is WAY funnier than every SNL alum who presented or did a bit onstage at the #Emmys tonight.
