The 70th Emmys was a grand affair, with SNL hosts Colin Jost & Michael Che bulldozing through some typical Hollywood vanity in their opening monologue. Casual mentions to the Ronan Farrow and ‘behaviour at the workplace’ meant that they also held up their end of mining humour out of Hollywood in a post-Weinstein era. To spice things up, there was an impromptu marriage proposal on stage eliciting equal numbers of awwws, ehhhs and ewwws.
Breakout stand-up comic star Hannah Gadsby, who suddenly captured the imagination of anyone with an Internet connection and a Netflix account, made a special appearance during the show. She came to present an award, and burned the stage with her (nearly) apologetic wit. Some conspiracy theories in the dark corners of the Internet suggest that Gadsby’s *mini-set* was aimed at co-host Michael Che. He has apparently been vocal about his disdain for Gadsby’s ‘routine’.

Usual suspects Game of Thrones and The Crown picked up multiple awards during the evening. Picking up the big one – Best Drama Series, Game of Thrones stamped its authority as a worldwide phenomenon. Peter Dinklage won his third Best Supporting Actor (Drama) as Tyrion Lannister, thanking George R R Martin and the showrunners D.B.Weiss & David Beinoff for turning his life around.
Matthew Rhys and Claire Foy won Best Actor (Male/Female) respectively, with The Americans star winning his first Emmy after being nominated for a consecutive fifth time. Foy’s regal turn as Queen Elizabeth didn’t go unnoticed, as the glowing and near-unanimous reviews around the second season of The Crown seemed to work in her favour. Benedict Cumberbatch’s passion project, Patrick Melrose, unfortunately lost everything to Ryan Murphy’s The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Darren Criss even beat Cumberbatch to Best Actor (Limited Series) breaking a few hearts on his way.
Amazon’s Marvelous Mrs Maisel swept through the four awards for Best Comedy series, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor categories. HBO’s Barry managed to get a few bites in the Best Comedy categories. Black Mirror’s Charlie Brooker picked up the Best Writing (Limited Series) for the fantastic USS Callister episode. Jesse Plemmons, who was also nominated for Best Actor (Limited Series), was seen sporting a moustache during the evening.
