It’s well established that Christian Bale is one of the most studious actors in Hollywood. And there’s proof to support this statement that dates back to the time when he wasn’t the global superstar, that he is today. Playing the iconic role of Bruce Wayne/Batman in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, Bale came up with a peculiar invention of his own. The voice of Batman. Something that quickly became the stuff of memes and multiple parodies.
In a recently surfaced Batman audition video, sees Bale try out the deep, raspy voice of Batman for the first time. Director Nolan confirms Bale’s approach saying that the actor was convinced from the very beginning, that he couldn’t play it ‘normal’. He had to evoke the dark mythology of the caped crusader, that terrifies all the goons of Gotham from stepping out at night. And Bale came up with this deep, husky voice that would help him differentiate Bruce Wayne and Batman. And also bring a certain amount of dread and intimidation with it, as he cleaned up the streets of Gotham.
Bale went on to star in all three of Nolan’s films as Bruce Wayne/Batman between 2005 and 2012, and won widespread critical acclaim for his affecting portrayal of the broken human inside the invincible Bat-suit. This partnership resulted in arguably the greatest trilogy of our times.
Christian Bale is in this year’s Oscars race for his remarkably opaque role of Dick Cheney in Adam McKay’s Vice. He’s already won the Best Supporting Actor for his role as Dick Ward in David O’Russell’s The Fighter. Can he also pick up Best Actor? We’ll find out in a month’s time.
