Tumbbad Promises An Exciting ‘Amar Chitra Katha Redux’ In New Trailer

How the Tumbbad trailer employs golden mohars (coins) is reminiscent of the many grandmother stories, we used to hear during vacations.

You may or may not have enjoyed Prosit Roy’s Pari, and yet we could still agree on the fact that it was an admirable attempt. Basking in the rich folklore of witches and djinns, Pari was successful in contemporarising the ancient character moulds. And now with Tummbad, Sohum Shah seems to be making similar effort to bring back the tales of greed, from ‘Amar Chitra Katha’.

If you remember the film’s teaser, it spoke about the God-son, Hastar. We hear more of him in the new trailer, while he seduces the greedy and lures them into a pit of death. The use of golden mohars (coins) in the trailer is reminiscent of the many childhood stories which end with a moral along the lines of – Greed is bad. And to use this moral lesson into a horror setting seems like an exciting choice!

Tumbbad has been co-written by Mitesh Shah and Anand Gandhi, who also happen to be the team behind Kajol-starrer Helicopter Eela. Another busy year for the writer-director, who has been on a hiatus since 2013’s Ship Of Theseus.

Set in 1920s Pune, the film is directed by debutante Rahi Anil Barve and has been in the works for nearly 4 years. Rich in atmosphere, this film looks like a step forward for an industry that has only seen Vikram Bhatt’s repetitive, lazy and frankly, shameless riffs on a horror film, for the past few years. Enough of Yorkshire pretending as Palampur, enough of the violins and please make that shrieking damsel stop. If you remember Sohum Shah’s last words from the teaser – get ready for Tumbbad.
