Bollywood controversies which kept everyone busy in 2017

From Padmavati to Ranbir-Mahira: 2017 will be remembered as the year of controversies for Bollywood

2017 was a year of controversies for Bollywood.  From Padmavati to Hrithik-Kangana almost everything became a topic of prime-time news debates. As the year draws to an end, we look back at the Bollywood controversies that garnered attention:

1. Padmavati hurt religious sentiments

Padmavati

One of the much-anticipated movies of this year, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmavati could not release this year, thanks to fringe groups and politics. Even as these groups alleged that the film had an intimate scene between Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh) and Rani Padmavati (Deepika Padukone), several states banned its screening. Eventually, the movie’s release was deferred indefinitely.

Kangana Ranaut and Hrithik Roshan’s ‘alleged’ affair

Whether or not Kangana Ranaut and Hrithik Roshan were in a relationship? Whether Kangana Ranaut stalked Hrithik Roshan? With no proofs whatsoever, the news channels and websites had enough speculations and theories to keep everyone hooked.

Mira Rajput’s comments on motherhood

This statement made by Mira Rajput is inappropriate on different levels. From comparing her daughter to a puppy (which any day need more care than a child) to belittling what working mothers do, Mira Rajput did a Shahid Kapoor with this one — being inappropriate.

Lipstick Under My Burkha was denied certification for being ‘lady-oriented’

Sasnkaari Pahalj Nihalani refused certification to Alankrita Shrivastava’s film saying it was ‘lady-oriented’. After a lot of outrage, the FCAT (Film Certification Appellate Tribunal) stepped in, and finally the movie got released.

Sonu Nigam went bald

In a series of tweets in April, Sonu Nigam called out ‘forced religiousness’ questioning azaan. A cleric from West Bengal issued a fatwa against him for speaking against azaan. In response, Nigam went bald and gave the cleric what he wanted.

Nepotism

By calling Karan Johar the ‘flagbearer’ of nepotism, Kangana Ranaut opened Pandora’s box and the term became the hot topic of discussion everywhere, from social media to TV debates.

Sexy Durga turned into S Durga

Because how can we have ‘Sexy’ before the name of a deity, right? CBFC’s favourite argument against the title of the movie was implied — it hurt religious sentiments.

How dare Mahira Khan share a smoke with Ranbir Kapoor?

A casual smoke break of two stars became the topic of discussion across social media. Mahira was slut-shamed for smoking because apparently, only men have the ‘right to smoke’.

Akshay Kumar’s comment on Mallika Dua was slammed:

On the sets of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, Akshay Kumar made the weirdest joke on Mallika Dua, which started conversations around sexism across all platforms. Mallika Dua was trolled, and eventually, she was sacked from the show.

Phew! 2018, we sincerely hope you come with fewer controversies.
