Anil, Sonam Kapoor-Starrer ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ Promises A ‘Syapa Love Story’

Looking for volunteers who to explain what 'syapa love story' is supposed to mean.

Isn’t there a society working to protect cult films and songs of our past from the remixed millennial turdiness of the present? Because your memories of the lilting music of 1942: A Love Story is about to get a Punjabi makeover, and there’s not much you can do about it.

The teaser of Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga has dropped and it begins with the iconic song of the same name. And even as you’re enjoying a glimpse into the ghosts of cinema past and this sort-of throwback to the hey days of Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala, Sonam Kapoor’s voice whining about the complications of love breaks into your reverie. Syapa she calls it. Because it is a truth universally acknowledged that Bollywood simply cannot make Rajasthan-based songs without the words ‘kesariya balma’ or a Punjab-based film without a generous helping of ‘syapa’ and ‘haye rabba’.

Starring Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Sonam Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, the film is helmed by first-time director Shelly Chopra Dhar. The story deals with the conflict between a father and his daughter (played by Anil and Sonam) after the latter discovers that he’s having an affair with his co-worker.

The film is slated to release later this year.
