Anil and Madhuri are teaming up after 18 years and here’s why our heart is going ‘dhak-dhak’

They will remain an iconic pair, forever!

Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit set the screen on fire with Dhak Dhak Karne Laga, one of the most sensuous songs in the history of Hindi cinema. The song from Indra Kumar’s Beta was picturised as a part of a dream sequenceAlmost 25 years after Beta, the director has signed the duo again for his upcoming — Total Dhamaal, the third part in the popular comedy franchise, Dhamaal.

The film is hitting the floors in January 2018 and is eyeing a big Diwali release next year. Along with Anil and Madhuri, Total Dhamaal will also feature Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Riteish Deshmukh and Javed Jaffrey in pivotal roles. Confirming the news to a leading daily, the director expressed his excitement and said,

Yes, Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit have been paired in Total Dhamaal which goes on the floors in January in Mumbai. This film is essentially a comedy so don’t expect any ‘dhak dhak‘ but I promise total dhamaal. Anil and Madhuri have always been a great pair to work with and getting them together again is a dream.

Besides Beta, which was the highest-grossing Bollywood movie in 1992, Madhuri and Anil’s magical chemistry was also evident in a few other films, namely Tezaab, Ram Lakhan, Jamai Raja, and Pukar. They starred together in as many as 16 movies including the not-so-successful ones like Hifazat (1987), Jeevan Ek Sanghursh (1990), Dharavi (1992), and Rajkumar (1996) among others.

Here are some of the best moments Anil and Madhuri have shared on the screen over the years. Of course, Dhak Dhak tops the list. Check it out here:

And here’s a scene from the same movie in which Madhuri’s character seduces Anil’s simpleton character, Raju. This scene also became popular where Madhuri Dixit is trying to make love with her hero. Check this out:

They debuted:

While Anil Kapoor debuted in the film industry way back in 1971, his first claim to fame remained Yash Chopra’s Mashaal, which released in 1984, the same year Madhuri Dixit debuted with Abodh. The two first shared screen space in Hifazat (1987), directed by Prayag Raj. One of the highlights of the movie is the famous Batata Wada song which depicted Madhuri and Anil’s weird romance sequence.

When Tezaab happened:

Even though Anil had established himself as the star with Shekhar Kapur’s 1987 release, Mr. India, it was only with 1988’s biggest blockbuster, Tezaab that he bagged his first ever Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Madhuri and Anil’s brilliant chemistry worked for the film.

Tezaab, which was deemed as ‘a violent love story’, made Madhuri an overnight star by giving her an instant hit chartbuster — Ek Do Teen. The other songs — Keh Do Ki Tum Meri Ho Warna and So Gaya Ye Jahan also became very popular. Watch these:

Some critical acclaim…

Then came Parinda and Ram Lakhan in 1989 which established the two as the superstar Jodi of Bollywood. While Ram Lakhan is remembered as the cult 90s popular cinema, Parinda garnered critical acclaim. It also became India’s official entry to Oscars in 1990. The film was remarked for its realism and one of the most aesthetically shot lovemaking scenes in the history of Bollywood. This:

Their film journey is incomplete without the mention of Ram Lakhan. The duo played childhood sweethearts and their chemistry was adorable in the film. Check these out:

A film with Hema Malini was a big deal

The following year, Madhuri and Anil came together for Jamai Raja which also starred Hema Malini. The film was praised for its entertaining content and of course, for Anil and Madhuri’s shining chemistry. Here’s a scene:

When the two took a backseat in another critically celebrated film:

After a few not-so-remembered roles, Anil and Madhuri created noise once again with Dharavi in 1992. Though the film featured Om Puri and Shabana Azmi in the lead, both Anil and Madhuri played pivotal roles in this Sudhir Mishra directorial. It garnered critical acclaim and also bagged the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi in 1993. Check this out:

The next year came Beta which also added to the sparkling filmography of both Anil and Madhuri. However, the next few films could not create the magic, except Rajkumar which was considered as an average grosser and got mixed reviews. Here is a song from the film:

Pukar cemented that their magic was alive and kicking

After a gap of four years in 2000, the duo starred in Pukar. The movie was a success and is known for Anil and Madhuri’s on-screen magic. Check out this sizzling dance number by the actress:

And now this scene where the two performed together without a single dialogue just before bursting into a beautiful song:

Why Total Dhamaal is a great news

It’s now been good 17 years since we saw Anil and Madhuri’s incredibly beautiful chemistry. They were last seen in 2001 film Lajja, but did not share screen space. To be able to see them in a comedy film is another reason to rejoice because they haven’t done a Hindi film together which is out and out a comedy film. In fact, their chemistry makes for one of the biggest reasons to anticipate Total Dhamaal. Isn’t it?

By the way, here’s when the two went back on a nostalgia trip with their brief performance in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa a few years back:
