Amitabh Bachchan on gender equality: Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Nanda will get my assets equally

A year after playing a progressive lawyer in Pink, Amitabh Bachchan has given a strong statement on gender equality

While we continue to clamour for equal rights for both men and women, Amitabh Bachchan has gone a step ahead and taken a step which is worth appreciation. In a heartfelt message on Twitter, the 75-year-old actor carries a banner which reads a message that is really thought-provoking. The message reads that after his death, the assets of Bachchan will be equally shared between his son Abhishek and daughter Shweta.

“When I die, the assets that I shall leave behind, shall be equally shared between my daughter and my son. #genderequality #WeAreEqual”, the banner read. The post went incessantly viral and was retweeted 641 times. This is indeed a powerful message and the Shehanshah of Bollywood has set an example for all of us.

Bachchan has always been vocal about women’s issues. Before the release of Pink, he had penned an emotional letter to his granddaughters Aaradhya and Navya Naveli.  He spoke in detail on listening to the heart and marriage. Bachchan played Deepak Sehgal in the film Pink, which was a take on how society looks down upon women and expects them to live according to norms which are crude and utterly regressive.

Recently, he was asked about his views on Gurmehar Kaur row, which has sparked a fierce debate following the February 22 clashes in Delhi University’s Ramjas College. He refused to comment saying it was his personal view and he did not want it to be public.

Besides Pink, Big B had starred in Ravi Chopra’s Baabul in 2006. In the film, he plays a man who refuses to ignore opposition from society and family to marry off his widowed daughter-in-law (Rani Mukerji). The role had earned Bachchan a lot of accolades.
