Aarushi Verdict: Renuka Shahane raises an important question on the Hemraj angle of the story

Renuka Shahane said if the movie Talvar was true to facts then Hemraj should be considered a hero. She raised some piercing questions on why Hemraj's murder never garnered as much attention as Arushi's did, in a Facebook post. Is there a class bias?

Renuka Shahane took to social media to express her opinion on the Allahabad High Court’s verdict on the Arushi Talwar-Hemraj double murder case. Through her post, Renuka brought to attention the story of the man- Hemraj, who was forgotten in the entire ruckus. Renuka wrote there was so little sympathy for Hemraj who was also murdered on the fateful night of 15 May 2008. She said no one gave much thought to Hemraj’s struggle and avoided the fact that justice was denied to him as well. Drawing references from the movie Talvar, based on the double-murder case, Renuka wrote if what was shown in the movie was true then Hemraj was a “hero”.

The parents of teenaged Arushi Talwar- Dr Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, were acquitted by the Allahabad HC on October 13. The two were charged with murder and destroying evidence. A CBI court had sentenced the couple to life imprisonment in 2013. Citing lack of proper evidence, and giving the couple ‘benefit of doubt’, the HC allowed them to walk free, after they had spent four years in Dasna prison, Ghaziabad. The High Court judgment brought to notice the botched up investigations conducted by two special teams of CBI and the initial investigation by Noida police. The HC judge said the CBI court judge behaved like a math teacher and a movie director.

In her post, Renuka Shahane spoke about these loopholes and highlighted an aspect of the case that is usually not spoken about in the media.

My take: The inherent class bias in the reporting of the Arushi-Hemraj double murder & how justice was denied to both by bad investigation pic.twitter.com/dsN2wdWy3R

Apart from Renuka, many Bollywood celebs hailed the verdict on this case. Irrfan Khan, who played an investigating CBI officer in Meghna Gulzar’s Talvar, also took to Twitter to write about it. He wrote:

Insaaf ki tarazoo .. #AarushiVerdict #Talwars

And here is how other celebs reacted:

ACQUITTED!!! Rajesh and Nupur Talwar not guilty of #Aarushi‘s murder. Finally, justice prevails, nightmare ends. #AarushiVerdict

Can the CBI admit they made a mistake, find the real killers, and not waste even more time by appealing #AarushiVerdict in Supreme Court?

So happy to hear that the court has acquitted these brave parents who’ve been through hell and back… #arushiverdict

Nothing worse than parents accused of their own daughters murder. And then horrible sordid made up stories lapped up by media #ArushiVerdict

With the acquittal of Talwars, the question, who killed Arushi Talawar, continues to remain a mystery.
