13 Reasons Why Is Coming Back. Here’s What To Expect From Season 2

Welcome to your... polaroid?

After much controversy and prolonged debates about ethical responsibility, hit Netflix series 13 Reasons Why is dropping Season 2 on May 18.

The streaming device shared a teaser trailer of the upcoming season and it does look like things haven’t quite settled down at Liberty High School. The series, based on Jay Asher’s young adult book by the same name created a furore last year after its premier.

To recap: Clay has managed to get a confession that he raped Hannah out of Bryce, Jessica (who too was raped by Bryce) has been forced to deal with the reality of what happened to her, and supremely creepy and possibly unstable gun-collecting Tyler was given way too much screen-time without clarifying why. Oh, and Alex apparently shot himself.

So a lot of cliffhangers to deal with right off the bat.

In case you were wondering, Season two is no longer following Asher’s book (which ended with the last tape). In the new season we will see her parents suing the school, Hannah’s friends struggling to deal with not just her suicide but uncovering another secret that sends the town spiralling.

“A series of ominous Polaroids lead Clay and his classmates to uncover a sickening secret and a conspiracy to cover it up,” declares the show’s description on Netflix. And the trailer pretty much sums up this same narrative. Polaroids have replaced tapes, by the by.

Katherine Langford, who plays Hannah in the show says that this season is about ‘letting Hannah go’.

“As sad as it is, there is life after Hannah, and this season we get to see the effects it had on the people around her a lot more,” she said, warning people that this time we’ll get to see “a very different Hannah”.

While the series has managed to garner a sizable fan base, it also received widespread criticism after two teens committed suicide. The show had moral and ethical responsibility to not show content that might trigger those struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts, said the grieving families. But those in favour of the show dismiss these claims saying that 13 Reasons Why does not in any way promote suicide or make it look glamorous as has been claimed.

The new season therefore comes amidst much contention and misgivings from a large part of the audience.
