Manohar Parrikar-led BJP government wins floor test in Goa, major blow for Congress

Manohar Parrikar resigned from the post of a Defence Minister and took charge as the chief minister of Goa on March 14

In a blow to Congress, Manohar Parrikar-led BJP government won the trust vote in the Goa assembly on March 16. During the floor test 16 MLAs opposed the move, 22 supported and one was absent. The floor test was conducted on Supreme Court’s directive. Earlier, the Congress moved the apex court to oppose Goa governor Mridula Sinha’s move to invite Manohar Parrikar-led BJP to form the government despite having won only 13 seats, while Congress emerged the single largest party with 17 seats.

“Goa Governor Mridula Sinha had played a partisan role in inviting the BJP to form a government although the Congress was the single largest party with 17 MLAs in the 40-member assembly,” the Congress party said in its plea.

On March 14, while hearing Congress party plea Supreme Court ordered immediate floor test but refused to put a stay on Parrikar’s oath taking ceremony.

“Digvijaya’s claims that they have numbers, debunked. Right from the beginning they didn’t have numbers,” Manohar Parrikar said after winning the floor test.
