Gautam Gambhir predicts end of MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh's career ahead of 2019 WC

The Indian team led by Virat Kohli is currently in Sri Lanka, playing an ODI series. Team India whitewashed the hosts in the Tests

It seems like it’s the end of the road for two of India’s most celebrated limited overs cricketers, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, according to former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir. It seems Gambhir feels that they won’t be a part of India’s 2019 cricket World Cup squad. Gambhir feels they need to give out extraordinary performances to hold onto their spots in a team that is cluttered with plenty of options. With Hardik Pandya getting into the mix with a good striker’s show and chipping in with the ball, it seems very difficult for these senior statesmen to survive two more seasons. The Indian team led by Virat Kohli is currently in Sri Lanka, playing an ODI series. Team India whitewashed the hosts in the Tests and then carried that form into the ODI’s, thrashing hosts in the first ODI.

But what Gambhir said has really caught the eye of many, as not so long ago Chairman of selectors MSK Prasad made a statement where he said that if Dhoni doesn’t perform, he will perish and about Yuvraj Singh he said that he has been ‘rested’ and not ‘dropped’.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, the Gautam Gambhir said: “I don’t think ‘rest’ is the right word because he (Yuvraj) hasn’t played any cricket for quite a while and he would be wanting to play. If you want to see him at the World Cup, he should be given the maximum opportunity.”

“Because, someone like Yuvraj, you want him in that flow, you want him in that rhythm. You can’t have someone like him playing in one series and resting thereafter. So, I feel that it’s difficult now for Yuvraj to make a comeback. Hopefully, he does because he is one of the greats of the game.”

Speaking of MS Dhoni, he said, “The only way he can survive till 2019 World Cup is by keep on performing. That should be the criteria for everyone, irrespective of whether he is Dhoni or someone else.”

“Okay, you have done something in the past but that’s passed. You can’t keep playing till you want to. At the same time I believe someone like Dinesh Karthik has been a massive loss for us because whenever he got an opportunity, he did well. He could have been your backup wicket-keeping option as well.”
