Begum Jaan audience review: Vidya Balan has delivered a brave performance

Begum Jaan tells the story of women in a brothel who refused to bow down to those trying to take their home

The story of how a brothel owner held her fortress has touched the right chord with viewers. The early movie goers for Begum Jaan have been heaping praises on the Vidya Balan starrer. They have called it one of the most amazing movies that Vidya Balan has been part of. Directed by Srijit Mukherjee, Begum Jaan is a Hindi remake of Bengali movie Rajkahini which featured Rituparna Sengupta in the lead role.

Set in the era of Independence, Begum Jaan tells the story of women in a brothel who refused to bow down to those trying to take their home. Touted as ‘when freedom finds independence’, Begum Jaan sings in the unsung tale of the oppressed.

When British decided to divide India into two little did they care about what impact it had on the people. Begum Jaan, tells the story of those people. While Rajkahini was set in Bengal, Begum Jaan has the backdrop of Punjab. As a foul-mouthed, fearsome brothel madam, Vidya Balan seemed nothing like what people have seen her.
