SC’s liquor ban impact: 34 swanky pubs, bars at Gurgaon-Delhi expressway may go dry soon

As many as 34 pubs and bars  situated near the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway at Gurgaon’s posh DLF CyberHub may have to shut down or relocate in light of Supreme Court’s order disallowing liquor outlets within a 500-meter radius of highways.

DLF  CyberHub, which is among NCR’s most famous hangout places for booze lovers,  may go dry soon as the swanky pubs and bars in here are likely to lose their licenses on April 1 in compliance with the apex court order.

Excise department have shortlisted another 109 pubs and 43 liquor outlets  whose contracts are very unlikely to be renewed after April 1, according to Hindustan Times.

The report also says that bars of several five star hotels and resorts also fall in the red zone.

In India, 330 million cases (9 litres each) of branded liquor are sold through more than 64,000 licensed outlets.

Nearly 26,800 of them need to be relocated or closed down, Economic Times reported  citing industry data vetted by the country’s top distillers.

On December 15, the apex court held that shops and bars selling all forms of liquor within 500 meteres of state and national highways should cease to exist citing a surge in road-accidents due to consumption of alcohol.

The apex court has also directed the administration and the police departments of all states to make sure that the order be enforced within a month.
