Too tired to run? Your shoes can sense it

Forget Nike and Puma, it's time to try out shoes that know what you want

The year 2016 goes to smart shoes. From Nike’s self-lacing shoes to the eco-friendly shoes that dissolve in water, the year has seen a transformation in the ‘smart-shoe’ technology and we’re already enthralled by the way things are pacing. But being the devout lover of technology that we are, we want more! And to satiate our thirst, American sports clothing and accessories brand Under Armour has come up with shoes that we all have been waiting for- shoes that can sense if we are too tired to run! (Yes, it’s true)

The new shoes are powered by powerful sensors and use Under Armour’s mobile app MapMyRun to give runners insights into their muscular fatigue prior to working out.

Under Armour’s latest shoes are an extension of its UA SpeedForm Gemini 2 RE, the smart shoes that the company released earlier this year, and extend MapMyRun’s capabilities to provide detailed workout stats, such as cadence, real-time pace information and the mileage lifetime of the shoe. The best part about the shoes is that you don’t need to recharge them, ever!

To measure your fatigue level, these smart shoes using something called a ‘Jump Test’, which according to company, ‘scientifically measures and elevates the awareness of an athlete’s muscular fatigue level’. Once you are connected to the MapMyRun, the sensors embedded in the shoes will measure the average air time of a sequence of jumps as an indicator of muscle fatigue. This technique not only helps to track an athlete’s recovery status over time but also provides immediate guidance on how to alter the intensity of a workout.

“We know one of the biggest problems runners face is pushing through pain and fatigue, leading to injury. The Jump Test in MapMyRun is a critical first step for runners and will help avoid the ‘training hangover’ many athletes face by giving them awareness into their ability to perform,” said Mike Lee, Chief Digital Officer at Under Armour.
