Viral Pakistani ad celebrating freedom of women finds takers across the border - Watch

Why you need to watch this ad where women are celebrating their identity

Since the partition of India into Pakistan, we’ve celebrated 71 years of Independence on the 14th and 15th of August respectively, the internet was flooded with voices saluting freedom. Independence Day may be behind us but the spirit of freedom still runs amok on the internet. This ad by Bonanza Satrangi has been going viral ever since it hit the social media. Celebrating the different colours of freedom, this ad has women from different walks of life speaking about how they need to create an identity of their own instead of following every other norm and guideline that is laid down for them.

This Pakistani ad starts with a straightforward question: “Azadi hoti kya hai?” (What is freedom?) and while the answer for everyone may vary, what is important is that everyone deserves freedom and must have the opportunity to appreciate the same freedom. As a dancer embraces her music on an open terrace, a cricketer donned the helmet to hit the field, there are women from different professions, pursuing different hobbies and defining what freedom means to them in their very own unique way.

But like every video that speaks about a woman’s freedom invites hatred from sexist men:

The video already has 1.8 million views and has been gaining a lot of positive feedback from both sides of the border. #AzaadiMeraLibaas is about the plurality of voices and the liberty to follow your free will.

She can be a disc-jockey in a club and she can break the presumptuous notion that she can play cricket with a strike right out of the boundary. She can be a mechanic in a hijab and she can practice her dance routine in the open. She has the right to laugh out loud in public spaces and live her life the way she wants to. She is the new-age millennial woman who is embracing her definition of freedom and not allowing anyone to bring her down.
