Meet Tamil Nadu's K Prithika Yashini, India's first transsexual sub-inspector

K Prithika Yashini now wants to become an IPS officer, for which she plans to prepare for the civil service exam during her free hours.

K Prithika Yashini, 26, scripted history, after she took charge as a sub-inspector in Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu. Yashini is the first transsexual to enter into uniform service in India.

After one year of rigorous training at the Tamil Nadu Police Academy, she reported for duty in the office of the Dharmapuri Superintendent of Police Bandi Gangadhar on April 2 and was posted in the law and order wing.

According to reports, Yashini thanked everybody after taking charge and said that she very happy for completing the training as it went well. She also said that she would fight foeticide and crime against women. Her next dream is to become an IPS officer, for which she plans to prepare for the civil service exam during her free hours.

It was only after fighting a long legal battle, Prithika was allowed to write the TN Uniformed Services Recruitment Board exam. But even a court order was not enough to convince the Board, which kept rejecting her application citing ‘flimsy’ reasons.

She was allowed to participate in field trials in August 2015 but wasn’t able to qualify in a 100-metre race. Again the court came to her rescue and passed an order in her favour.

K Prithika Yashini, who was born as Pradeep Kumar had to first fight the society to alter identify which she succeeded after a sex change operation to become who she believed she was from within. From Salem, Yashini moved to Chennai and there she was readily accepted by the transgender community in the city. The community helped her and she began her career working as a warden in a ladies hostel .
