Kavita Devi becomes the first Indian woman to feature in WWE

Former competitive power lifter Kavita Devi has gone under training from former WWE Champion Khali in his Punjab-based wrestling and training academy.

Kavita Devi has become the first Indian woman to appear in World Wide Entertainment (WWE). Kavita is a former powerlifter and has represented India in South Asian Games and also managed to win a gold medal. Kavita will be making her first appearance in WWE’s first ever women’s tournament, ‘Mae Young Classic’. The announcement from WWE came on June 22. Kavita has gone under the training of none other than the ‘Great Khali’ who has represented India in WWE for years. She has also featured in a fight between her and wrestler Bulbul at Khali’s Punjab-based wrestling promotion and training academy.

Kavita had qualified to feature as a wrestler in WWE after getting picked in Dubai tryouts. Kavita hails from Haryana and her photos in traditional Indian dress during a fight with Bulbul went viral exactly a year ago.

Kavita was ecstatic on being the first woman to wrestle in WWE, she told IANS, “I am honoured to be the first Indian woman to compete in WWE’s first ever women’s tournament. I hope to use this platform to inspire other Indian women with my performance and make India proud.”

WWE’s first ever women tournament, ‘Mae Young Classic’ will be held at Full Sail Live in Orlando, Florida from June 13 to June 14.

Vice-President of WWE Talent Development, Canyon Ceman said: “Kavita Devi gave a strong performance at WWE’s 2017 Dubai tryout. She is an athletic and extremely strong woman who demonstrated a solid grasp of the fundamentals of sports entertainment, and a passion to improve that will serve her well in WWE’s upcoming Mae Young Classic tournament.”
