MS Dhoni opens up how Rohit Sharma who was inducted into the team as a middle-order batsman and later was promoted to open the innings which turned out to be the turning point in his career

The members of the Indian Cricket team often speak that former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has an ability to recognise his fellow players’ specialities. Dhoni’s this skill discovered a new opener for team India in limited over formats. This fact was revealed by MS Dhoni himself in an interactive session recently held in Bangalore. Ahead of leaving for Sri Lanka to play the 5-match ODI series and a T20I, Dhoni along with Kedar Jadhav addressed a session in a National Cricket Academy where he spoke about why a player should admit his weakness to improve himself.

He spoke about Rohit Sharma who was inducted into the team back in 2007 as a middle-order batsman and later was promoted to open the innings which turned out to be the turning point in his career. Dhoni said,”We have to see what others are not seeing. Rohit Sharma is one of the best examples. He accepted that challenge of becoming an opener. In limited-overs, he is one of the best openers who is playing currently. You have to at times think out of the box. We were like the amount of talent this guy has, I have to make him play. For that, if I have to make him an opener, I will do it.”

He also spoke about how the young talents of the team could be tested and recognised. He said,”If you keep losing games, you can’t give games to individuals. If you lose 3-4 games, you have to make a few changes. If you keep playing the same XI then others who are your bench strength won’t get a reality check of what they have on offer. It is slightly complex but what’s easiest and what always works during a series is to give the individual as much confidence as possible.”

Earlier Rohit Sharma had also admitted that MS Dhoni was the man behind his evolution as an opener of the Indian team. he also revealed that the change in his batting order made him more confident about his game and changed his career completely.

The Indian cricket team will be locking horns with the Upul Tharanga-led Sri Lankan team on August 20 in Dambulla in the first ODI of the series.
