Mithali Raj & Co returned India on July 26 early in the morning after participating in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2017 held in England and Wales. As soon as they landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport, Mumbai, they received a heartwarming reception. A huge number of fans gathered at the airport’s arrival gate to have a look of the brave Indian women cricketers for whom they clapped and cheered. The Indian women’s cricket team recently lost the final game against England by a mere 9 runs at the Lord’s. Though they lost a chance to script history, they also won everyone’s heart.

Under the captaincy of Mithali Raj, the Indian eves played a phenomenal cricket throughout the series. They kickstarted their world cup 2017 journey with a superb victory which they registered after defeating the English Team. They lost two games against Australia and South Africa but they successfully beat New Zealand to reach the semis. There they smashed the 6-times world champion Australia by 36 runs and stepped into the finals. Despite an outstanding bowling performance in the final, the Indian batswomen fell 9 runs short to lift the trophy.

After 12 years, the Indian women’s team reached the finals. Doesn’t matter they ended up on the losing half but they gave the Indians a reason to cheer for them.

Here’s how the people welcomed their national heroes:

Some of the cricketers also interacted with the media personnel present to cover the women’s team arrival. Skipper Mithali Raj was very surprised with such a huge reception.

She said,”None of us ever experienced this kind of reception, good that women are doing really well in sports & they should be celebrated. This change was much required. People didn’t know much about Women’s Cricket but our performance spoke for us.”

India’s young spinner Poonam Yadav also interacted with ANI and said,”Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami are legends. We wanted to win World Cup for them. We performed really well in World Cup, gave consistent performances, couldn’t win the trophy, doesn’t matter. People started knowing us.”
