UP Polls: BJP leads exit polls but Akhilesh still most preferred CM candidate

BJP doesn't have as popular a CM face as Akhilesh Yadav.

Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) will win the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls with 206-216 seats and 33% vote share, according to a news poll.

The incumbent Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav is expected to come second in the crucial state by winning 92-97 seats and 22% vote share. The Bahujan Samajwadi Party led by Mayawati will win 79-85 seats. Of all the competing parties, Congress will perform the worst, bringing only 5-9 seats in their bag from the most populous state in India.

These figures have been revealed by India Today Access opinion poll.

Despite the prophecy that  the BJP will win the elections, the most preferred Chief Minister Candidate in the State is still Akhilesh Yadav. Akhilesh, who is currently the CM of the state, has been going through turmoil with his father and founder of SP, Mulayam Singh Yadav.

According to polls, 33% people in UP would like to see Akhilesh return as the CM over the likes of Rajnath Singh (20%), Aditya Nath (18%), Priyanka Gandhi, Varun Gandhi and Mulayam Singh Yadav (each having 1% of popularity).

The winning of BJP hints that incidents like surgical strikes and demonetization have worked in its favor. It shows that Prime Minister Narendra Modi painting the picture of development has been liked by UP residents.

However, it is Akhilesh Yadav who has stood out i this opinion poll. The CM of UP is amid a power tussle with his father which may well lead to the splitting of the political outfit. But his popularity hints that even SP loyalists would like to see him take the chair again.

On the other hand,  Congress’ forecast for the election have raised further questions on the leadership of Rahul Gandhi.

Though, these are just predictions the state’s elections will definitely be awaited by the entire nation.
