Celebrated as a thanksgiving to Lord Surya for the year’s harvest, Pongal is a four-day long festival celebrated at the start of Tamil month. The first day is Bhogi (January 14) followed by Surya Pongal (January 15) on the next day. The third day is Mattu Pongal ( January 16) dedicated to cattle and the final day is known as Kannum Pongal (January 17).

All four days of Pongal are associated with a lot of delicacies, making the occasion a gourmet’s delight. The word Pongal itself refers to the “boiling over” of milk and rice during the month of Thai.

Chakkara Pongal: Made from the newly harvested rice this delicacy is a delight to have. Preparing it on the day of Surya Pongal is a tradition in Tamil Nadu.

Ingredients: Raw Rice, Moong dal, Jaggery, Cashew nuts, Raisins, Cardamom, ghee.

Ven Pongal: It tastes amazing when accompanied with traditional South Indian Sambhar. It is one of the famous South Indian breakfast recipes.

Ingredients: Raw rice, Green gram dal, Water, Whole black pepper, Cumin seeds, Cashew nuts, and Ginger.
