This doctor from Coimbatore treats his patients for free of cost. Know why

After an encounter with an HIV patient, he realised the plight of those living with HIV and decided not to charge fees

In today’s time when it gets really difficult for the majority of the people to pay a huge amount as fees to doctors, Dr K Mahadevan has come as a ray of hope for many. He urges his patients to give what they want to as he does not insist on fees at all.

For many years, Dr Mahadevan is treating patients who are living with HIV at his clinic on Cross Cut Road in Coimbatore, he has told all his patients they can pay whatever they want to. “If at all they want to give, let them give whatever they want,” he said.

In a report published in The News Minute, Patients can put what they wish as fees in a box kept at Dr Mahadevan clinic. From whatever money he earns, a portion of it is used to pay his rent, pay his receptionist and run his home. He donates remaining of it to causes like “Sneha for Positive Faces” of Nirmala College, which is an initiative for HIV-positive people

After an encounter with an HIV patient, he realised the plight of those living with HIV and decided not to charge fees from the HIV positive people. Dr Mahadevan said, “From that day I made the treatment free for HIV positive people. Then I thought why it should be free for HIV-positive people alone. All people are suffering – whether it is those with common cold or leprosy or HIV. Therefore, we decided to not ask for any fees from the suffering people who come to the clinic,”.

Meenakshi, President of the HIV Ullor Nala Sangam, an organisation which works for the welfare of HIV positive people said, “He was one of the first people to come forward to treat persons with HIV. Today, if there are many persons with HIV who are living happy and healthy lives, it’s only thanks to him”.
