Tamil Nadu: Week before retirement, govt employee commits suicide so that his son gets the job

"We suspect that he took the extreme step due to personal issues", said P Pakalavan, Superintendent of police

In a shocking incident, a government employee in Tamil Nadu committed suicide a week before his retirement so that his son can get a job on compassionate ground.

Body of 58-year-old Mahalingam was found hanging in the premises of his office. He was working as an office assistant at Katpadi Block Development Office in Vellore district, Tamil Nadu

Police found a three page suicide from his pocket in which he alleged that he took this extreme step because he was harassed by one of his colleagues in the office and was insulted by him. He in his suicide note also mentioned that he was in the state of depression.

Also, he was unable to pay the loan of Rs 30 lakhs which he had collected from various people over a period of time. His son had no proper job so he couldn’t help him to pay his debt. Therefore, police is suspecting that he took the step so that his family can be benefitted from his pension and his son might also get his job.

A police official investigating the case said, “We suspect that he committed suicide to help his son get a government job on compassionate ground,”.

A source said that Mahalingam came to the office at 9:00 in the morning and signed the attendance register. He then asked the guard to go and have breakfast and when he returned he found Mahalingam hanging on a tree in the office premises.

Superintendent of police P Pakalavan said, “We suspect that he took the extreme step due to personal issues.”

Mahalingam retirement was due on March 31. He  is survived by wife, a son and two daughters.
