SC constitution bench to hear triple talaq case from May 11

Triple talaq matter will be heard in the top court by a 5-judge bench

The constitutional bench of the Supreme Court will begin hearing into triple talaq case from May 11. The please challenging the validity of triple talaq will be heard in the top court by a 5-judge bench. Several women have filed a petition before the Supreme Court seeking the quashing of the triple talaq practice.

The apex court had earlier stated that it will not debate the important issue of uniform civil code (UCC). However, the petitioners had told the apex court that the matter is a serious and sensitive issue and the court should hear it.

Defending the practice, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board had said that it is better to divorce a woman than kill her. It also added that the rights bestowed by religion can’t be questioned in a court of law.

The Muslim body has claimed that any order against Triple Talaq would be an infringement on their right to follow and profess any religion.

A number of petitions against Triple Talaq have been heard by the Supreme Court.
