Passengers drugged and robbed on Rajdhani Express, 11 FIRs lodged

As many as nine coaches of August Kranti Rajdhani Express were targetted by thieves who stole an estimated Rs 10-15 lakh from nearly a dozen passengers.

Passengers travelling in the Rajdhani Express from Mumbai to Delhi were drugged and robbed near Kota in Rajasthan. As many as nine coaches of August Kranti Rajdhani Express were targetted by thieves who stole an estimated Rs 10-15 lakh from nearly a dozen passengers. Many of the passengers were allegedly drugged and their money stolen by the robbers. A total of 11 passengers have filed FIRs in connection with the theft.

Empty wallets and purses were found dumped near the toilets and vestibules of the train. As soon as the train arrived this morning, passengers rushed to report their cash and belongings missing.

“I have lost valuables and cash worth Rs. 50,000… I have heard that at least seven-eight coaches are affected,” said a victim adding that the train was left virtually unguarded when there was a change of staff at Rajasthan’s Kota.

Speaking with NDTV passenger Alka Jain, said her purse, iPhone, passport, Aadhaar card and 18,000 cash had been stolen. “When I realised that my purse was gone, a woman came screaming from another coach that her bag had been stolen.”

The Mumbai – Nizamuddin Rajdhani is one of the premium and most sought-after trains on the route.

IN April, Robbers targeted the New Delhi-Patna bound (12310) Rajdhani Express and decamped with cash and jewellery worth lakh of rupees.The incident had taken place between Mughalsarai (Uttar Pradesh) and Buxar (Bihar) stations, under the East Central Railway (ECR).

Reacting to the incident, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said CCTV cameras are being installed in coaches to keep a check on such incidents. “These crimes have been happening since ages. They are coming down in numbers,” he told the Indian Express.
