Meat suppliers in Lucknow go on indefinite strike against ban on unlicensed slaughter houses

Due to lack of interest from the side of authorities, now our business has turned illegal, said President of Lucknow Murga Mandi Samiti

Few days after the newly formed government in Uttar Pradesh announced closing down of all unlicensed slaughter houses, meat suppliers have gone on an indefinite strike against the order in Lucknow.

Lucknow Murga Mandi Samiti President, Sanjay Saxena said that the members of association had applied for the licenses three years ago but no reply came. It is sheer ignorance from the side of authorities that now our business has turned illegal.

“We were forced to work without licence because LMC is neither issuing fresh licence, not renewing old licences for the past three years. Our legal business turned illegal because of the apathy of the authorities and now the crackdown has hit our livelihood,” he said.

LMMS provides broiler chicken to restaurants, small food joints, hotels and also to over 5,000 retailers.

Meanwhile, meat suppliers from the other areas of the state are also likely to join them in the protest.

President of Lucknow’s Murga Bakra Vyapar Kalyan Samiti ,which supplies goats and broiler chicken to various restaurants across Lucknow, Iqbal Qureshi said, “We are talking to dealers’ associations across the state and would announce a state-wide strike by evening.”

Some days back, newly appointed Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced shutting down of all the slaughter houses which are running illegally in the state and had also asked police officials to make an action plan for closing down of all these slaughter houses.

Earlier, BJP President Amit Shah in the election meetings had said that if their party comes to power in the state, it will shut down all the slaughter houses.
