At a time when we often come across incidents of rape and molestation, a woman took to task a Godman and chopped off his genitals when he allegedly tried to rape her. The incident took place in Thiruvananthapuram’s Pettah in Kerala on May 19.

The man has been identified as Sreehari alias Ganeshananda Theerthapada Swami (54). He was seriously injured and was admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College hospital late night.

Commenting on the incident at a press conference, the Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan hailed the woman’s “brave step. It’s a good thing the girl did.”

According to the police, the accused Ganeshananda Theerthapada Swami knew 23-year-old woman’s family for a long time and used to visit her house to conduct religious ceremonies (pujas). He used to visit the girl’s home at Kannamula in Thiruvananthapuram to pray for her ailing father.

The police have registered a case against the man under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

In a statement given by the woman to the police, she said, the accused had been harassing her over for the past 6 years. He first raped her when she was 16 years old. When she got to know about that Ganeshananda will visit her house on May 19, she has concealed a knife in her hand this time. When he tried to assault her again, the woman chopped off his penis with a knife.

According to Police, the woman took the extreme step as she knew that no one would believe that she was sexually assaulted by a Godman. The woman is a law student.

However, no case has been registered against the woman but she woman has been taken to a women’s shelter run by the government.
