Amid the whole storm of demonetisation, while some have been forced to take up a fakeer lifestyle, politician Gali Janardhana Reddy is throwing a bigger than big, fat Indian wedding for his daughter, Brahmani, on November 16. What’s actually astonishing is that Reddy, who is supposedly one of the richest politicians in Karnataka, had had his assets seized by investigating authorities. Yet, somehow, he has managed to host the event at the Palace Grounds in Bengaluru, sprawling across the entirety of 50-acres. The grounds will be redesigned to be reminiscent of the Vijayanagara empire’s architecture. What’s more? Oh, you’ll get a kick out of this. The guest list includes a whopping 50,000 people!
Reddy was involved in a case of illegal iron ore mining which was unearthed (pun intended) back in 2011 and followed his arrest. His assets were seized by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and considering the current demonetisation move when everyone feels reluctant to loosen their purse strings, Reddy just can’t help but splurge at his daughter’s wedding. How is he even paying for this?
Before the confiscation of his assets, Reddy had lived in a mansion for a house, loaded with a chopper and a freaking 15kg golden throne which would put even Daenerys Targaryen’s majestic Iron Throne to shame. He has always lived his life king-sized. You would assume that after having spent some quality time in prison, he would let it go but, even the invitation cards for the wedding cost approximately 1 crore. In case you’re wondering how that’s even possible, the invites were gold plated and had an LED video display playing a welcoming wedding dance. Insane, right?
An unofficial estimation of the expenditure amounts to hundreds of crores. The wedding is also said to feature a dance performance from Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif. Band Baaja Baaraat, anyone? Honestly, is this a wedding or an awards ceremony! According to some reports, a Telugu star refused a buy-out of Rs 50 lakh for a performance. Reddy hasn’t revealed the details of the expenditure but, Bollywood/Tollywood celebrities, chariots, and a dozen helipads aren’t exactly available for exchange for chump change.
Reddy will also be shipping in guests for the wedding and has arranged for their accommodation in over 1500 rooms and has booked around 2000 cabs for their convenience. In itself, this amounts to approximately 20 crores over the cost of event management and the cost of the location.
Many VVIPs (celebrities and politicians) have chosen to keep their distance from the excessive grandeur including state health minister KR Ramesh Sharma who said, “no self-respecting person would attend the wedding.” Due to the VIPs maintaining their stand against black money, the guest list for the extravagant fest has shortened a bit.
Apparently, all financial transactions had already been looked after months ago. Also, Reddy has reportedly mortgaged some his properties for a sum of 30 crores. He claims to disclose the entire expenditure once the wedding has concluded.
