A rape survivor who had reportedly accused a Samajwadi Party leader of rape was found dead in Sultanpur area of Uttar Pradesh on February 13. The woman who’s body was recovered on Sunday had gone missing since Saturday. The development comes almost four years after she filed a case against the politicians and seven others.

The SP MLA who has been named in the complaint is identified as Arun Verma and is a lawmaker from the Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. According to reports, the 22-year-old girl had filed a complaint and alleged that she was gang-raped by the SP leader and others in the year 2013. It was only recently that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav campaigned for Arun Verma ahead of upcoming UP elections.

The deceased’s father claimed that his daughter had left to use the washroom but did not return for a long time prompting the family to call the police. The police officials rushed to the spot and recovered the body. The father of the deceased has filed a complained and accused the SP leader of murder. However, the MLA refuted all the allegations stating that he was not present in Sultanpur at the time of the incident.

The police said that the woman had injury marks on the neck which hinted the fact that she could have been strangled to death. The police had cleared his name from the complaint filed in 2013 due to lack of evidence. The woman had also changed her statements a number of times and did not name the sP leader in her first complaint.
