Happy Mother's Day: 5 types of mothers in Bollywood who prove Indian moms are the most dramatic in the world

From Nirupa Roy to Kirron Kher, Bollywood has no dearth of on-screen mommies who are known to be melodramatic

Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan took rebirth to avenge the injustice to their mom Rakhee Gulzar in Karan Arjun. Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor fought over who would stay with their mother Nirupa Roy in Deewar. Sonam Kapoor had a bestie in form of mother Kirron Kher in Khoobsurat. And why are we telling you all this? Because it’s Mother’s Day today.

Just like in our lives, a mother plays an important role in our Bollywood films too. A typical filmy mommy has various shades. She is an epitome of sacrifice like Nirupa Roy, overpowering as Aruna Irani or Bindu, affectionate as Farida Jalal or a modern bindass mum as Kirron Kher. On this day, we take a look at different types of Bollywood mummies.

Margdarshak Maa: Do you remember how many times you turned up to your mother for an advice? We are sure, she had a solution to all your problems. In Bollywood too, there are classic examples in which they were more friends than mothers. Remember Farida Jalal from Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge, who silently supports her daughter Simran (Kajol), even advising her to elope with Raj (Shah Rukh Khan)? In 2014 film Khoobsurat, Manju (Kirron Kher) has a readymade solution to all the problems faced by her daughter Mili (Sonam Kapoor).

Cupid Maa: Yes, mothers can play cupid to their sons or daughters as well. At least in Bollywood, we have such moms. Remember Farida Jalal who ensured her son Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) reunited with longtime friend Anjali (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai)?

Tyag Ki Murti (Sacrificing) Maa: Sharmila Tagore decided to be her son Suraj’s nanny after he was adopted by a family from an orphanage in Aradhana. Later, she took the blame for a murder accidentally committed by Suraj and spent several years in jail. Similarly, Shanti (Waheeda Rahman) walks out of his lover Raj Kumar Gupta (Sanjeev Kumar)’s life after informing him that she was pregnant with his child. Later, she raises her son Vijay on her own. The fans still remember those examples in which women raised their children without caring about the society.

Sanskari Maa: Much before Alok Nath urged everyone to be rooted in the Indian culture, our on-screen mommies had set an example for mothers all over India to uphold family values. For example, Reema Lagoo slaps her son Prem (Salman Khan) when he accuses her of behaving like a step-mother in Hum Saath Saath Hain. Jaya Bachchan is scared to go against her husband Amitabh Bachchan when son Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) marries Anjali (Kajol) against his father’s wishes in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.

Overpowering Maa: If a Bollywood mommy can be kind and sweet, she can be ruthless as well. Be it Bindu in Biwi Ho To Aisi or Ratna Pathak Shah in Khoobsurat, they were dominant and ruled the household with an iron hand. And who can forget Arun Irani in Beta and the iconic Lalita Pawar?
