Priyanka Chopra’s Hollywood debut Baywatch which was religiously promoted failed to leave a mark at the Box Office. The movie, that released globally last week, hit screens in India yesterday. Despite being the one movie that was awaited by cine buffs. Baywatch did not find any takers at the ticket counters. The movie is reported to have earned a little over Rs 2 crore at the domestic market, a number that is extremely disappointing.
Apart from Priyanka, Baywatch boasted of an ensemble cast including Dwayne Johnson, Zac Effron and Alexandra Daddario. Based on the popular TV series, Baywatch had Priyanka Chopra in the role of an antagonist Victoria Leeds. The movie, undoubtedly, featured some of the most renowned faces but those actors did not manage to ensure footfalls at the theatres.
The critics were also not impressed with the movie. Many suggested the film’s plot was weak and not all the actors were used up to their potential. The movie was slammed by critics for taking convenient plot turns that put the viewers off. Priyanka’s character was also termed as an underused one.
While Baywatch did not don decent enough business at the Box Office abroad, it was expected that it would perform better in India. The movie being Priyanka’s big Hollywood debut and the fact that she enjoys a huge stardom in India, these numbers are quite disappointing, What may not have worked for the movie are the poor reviews. Another factor could have been the competition from Baahubali: The Conclusion which is still running strong at the Box Office after six weeks of release. Sachin: A Billion Dreams, the docu-feature on Sachin Tendulkar is also maintaining it’s strong hold at the Box Office.
