After Nawazuddin Siddiqui's ad sparks row for mocking domestic violence, company claims clip misinterpreted

Nawazuddin Siddiqui featured in a Pakistani advertisement that went viral on social media and was slammed for making fun of domestic violence

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the celebrated actor of Bollywood, featured in an advertisement that faced the ire people on social media. In the advertisement, the actor was seen nagging about his wife in front of his friends and flaunting how he did ‘dhulayi’ of her when she misbehaved. The unreleased advertisement went viral on a Facebook page and was slammed by netizens because of the regressive attitude it displayed.

Kenwood, the washing machine company for which this advertisement was made, issued a statement saying the clip was misconstrued, suggest media reports. After sharp criticism, the company reportedly said this was not their intention and asked everyone to take down the video from social media. However, the apology and clarification came too little too late, it seems. Netizens are in no mood to buy the defence of the company and criticised it for making fun of domestic violence.

In the video, Nawazuddin Siddiqui can be seen sitting among his friends and bragging how he put his ‘wife to place’ when she misbehaved. The clip later made fun of the fact that Nawazuddin was actually scared of his wife.

At a time when domestic violence is one of the grave issues that society deals with, making fun of it was definitely not at all humorous. One comment on Facebook read: “It seems that this ad is part of a campaign showing a husband who is spineless and brag-a-mouth and has no control over what he says. He also thinks that bragging about beating or “putting” his wife in her place is some sort of macho thing. Our women and ALL women for that matter are scared and any of you that find this funny should consider a man beating your mother, sister or daughter …and you laughing and thinking it is OK. Shame on Kenwood and its Executives that allowed this to take place – Their Disclaimer is also another eyewash and stinks of the same corporate nonsense that Delta Airlines demonstrated recently. This is not over yet!”

But this was not the only one. Many felt that the advertisement was in bad taste. We wonder when Nawazuddin will break silence on the matter.

Here is the advertisement that is doing rounds of social media:
