He said the country has a lot more than just cricket and to identify talent we need to map sport persons at the district level.
Narendra Damodardas Modi, 65, is the 15th prime minister of India and a member of the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Elected to Lok Sabha (lower house of Indian parliament) from Varanasi, Modi started his public life with the Hindu-nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Prior to being elected as the prime minister, Modi served as the chief minister of the state of Gujarat for 13 years.
In spite of being credited for leading his party to a full majority in the 2014 parliamentary elections, Narendra Modi continues to be a controversial figure in Indian politics. During his time in Gujarat, Modi has been accused of not doing enough to stop the 2002 anti-Muslim riots. While he has been a subject of numerous legal cases, he has never been convicted by any court of law. In fact, a special investigative team instituted by the Supreme Court of India couldn’t find any evidence supporting Modi’s involvement in the riots.
As prime minister, Narendra Modi has started a slew of innovative schemes – both social as well as economic – like Make in India, Digital India, Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao. Modi is also credited for reinvigorating the foreign policy of India and working on major bilateral relationships. While Modi has been criticised for excessive foreign travels, experts believe the prime minister’s trips have only helped the country.
Pakistan is the one country where Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been faulted for not getting it right. In spite of his numerous attempts including an impromptu visit to Lahore, India- Pakistan relationship hasn’t moved beyond the conventional ping-pong match. Modi government has also been accused of mishandling the situation in Kashmir. Over 70 civilians have been killed since an unrest erupted in the valley in the aftermath of the killing of militant Burhan Wani. Pakistan has been quick in accusing India of human right abuse which Modi tried to counter by invoking Pakistan’s own track record in Baluchistan.
Narendra Modi’s tenure as prime minister has also created a few controversies, prominent among them is the beef ban. While Modi is not directly accused of enforcing beef ban in India, his critics question his silence on the issue. The prime minister has, however, criticised the gau rakshaks (cow vigilantes) who have been accused of attacking Dalits in a number of states including Gujarat.
Post-2014, Narendra Modi has also been credited with a number state assembly wins for BJP including Maharashtra, Jammu & Kashmir and Assam.
